Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 2026

Terremoto ("we", "our", or "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how we handle information when you use our earthquake tracking application or visit our website.

Information We Collect

Terremoto has no accounts and does not ask for your name, email, or any other personal identification. What the app handles depends on whether you turn on earthquake alerts.

If you do not use alerts

  • Location Data: With your permission, the app uses your device's location to show earthquakes near you and calculate distances. This is processed locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

If you turn on earthquake alerts

Earthquake alerts are available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The Windows version of Terremoto does not offer alerts and does not send your location anywhere.

Alerts require our servers to know roughly where you are, so that we can work out which earthquakes are near you. When you enable alerts, the app sends and we store:

  • An approximate area, not your exact location. Before anything leaves your device, your position is rounded to a grid cell roughly 5 km across. That is all our servers ever receive — enough to tell whether an earthquake was near you, and not enough to identify a street or an address. Your precise coordinates never leave your device.
  • Your alert preferences — the notification radius and minimum magnitude you selected.
  • A push notification token — an identifier issued by Apple that lets us deliver notifications to your device.
  • A random installation identifier — generated on your device so we can update your existing record instead of creating a new one each time. It is not linked to you, your Apple Account, or any other app.

There are no user accounts. We never ask for your name, email, or phone number, and we have no way to connect a registration to a person.

This information is used only to send you earthquake alerts. It is never sold, shared with advertisers, or used to build a profile of you.

Deleting your alert data

Turning alerts off in the app deletes this data from our servers. There is nothing else to do and no account to close. Deleting the app also stops delivery, and the stored record is removed automatically once Apple reports the notification token as no longer valid.

Website Analytics

When you visit the Terremoto website, Google Analytics may collect information such as page views, interactions, browser and device details, and approximate location derived from your IP address. We use this information to understand website usage and improve the site. Website analytics are entirely separate from the Terremoto app and are not connected to any alert registration.

Data the App Does Not Collect

  • Personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
  • Account credentials
  • Precise location — alerts use an approximate area only
  • Location history — we store only your current area, never a trail of where you have been
  • Advertising identifiers, or any device identifier used for cross-app tracking
  • In-app analytics or usage telemetry of any kind

Third-Party Services

Terremoto uses earthquake data from publicly available geological services (such as USGS). When you view earthquake information, your device connects to these services to retrieve the latest data. We recommend reviewing their respective privacy policies.

Earthquake alerts are delivered through the Apple Push Notification service. Apple handles the delivery of the notification to your device; see Apple's privacy policy for how that service operates.

Data Storage

All app preferences and settings are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain user accounts.

If you enable alerts, your approximate area, alert preferences, notification token, and random installation identifier are stored on servers we operate, and are retained only for as long as alerts remain enabled. Turning alerts off deletes them. Registrations that stop checking in are removed automatically.

Children's Privacy

Terremoto does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app is designed for general audiences and does not require any personal information to function.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
